Taiwan's electric scooter market strengthening in time of climate change

Hyderabad : As things have come to a grinding halt in countries across the world with the coronavirus pandemic, it’s the future that also requires attention. While the government has implemented safety protocols to keep infections at bay, Taiwan is also ensuring that it is slowly preparing for the future.

Dubbed the Kingdom of Bikes, the island is trying to strengthen its electric scooters market. More widespread use of e-scooters could be an excellent addition to the rise in the use of EVs. Currently, powered by the vehement voices and demands for climate change, Taiwan’s electric scooter market is experiencing a boom. The country’s electric scooter market is set to establish itself as an industry standard on a global level.

Ahead of the second anniversary of the Taiwan Electric Vehicle Alliance (TEVA), Taiwan is being increasingly recognized internationally as the ‘nation of electric scooters.’ According to Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Freedonia, sales of electric scooters across the world reached almost 600,000 units in 2019. Asia accounted for 76% of the global sales, while Europe and North America took 8.8% and 7.5%, respectively. The electric scooter market is forecast to grow by an impressive 11% every year.

While governments across the world are proposing special measures to combat climate change like tax cuts, limits on high pollution vehicle production, laws and regulations, subsidies, etc., the future of the electric scooter industry seems to be getting stronger.

The Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) formed TEVA in 2018 as a "national team" to promote Taiwanese electric vehicles globally. TEVA has been providing a collective platform to several Taiwan companies from allied industries and they have grouped together to expand to international markets.

Speaking about the development, Mark Wu, Executive Director of TAITRA’s Strategic Marketing Department said“These scooters could prove to be important tools to help mitigate the use of fossil fuels for transportation, especially in urban environments where shorter ranges are not a hindrance. We hope that once the situation improves in countries, we can actively talk about the use of electric vehicles to reduce the impact on climate and environment.”

TAITRA planned to showcase several scooter-related industries at the major 3-in-1 automobile-related expo, Taipei AMPA, AutoTronics Taipei, and Motorcycle Taiwan, originally scheduled for April. The event is now postponed to Oct. 21-24 at Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2 to ensure the health and safety of participants.
