What to do in high fever?

One of the most common signs of illness is having a fever, but if you look at it sceptically, it is not such a bad thing. Whenever any foreign bacteria enter into your body, the first line of the defence mechanism for the body is to increase its temperature. Therefore, fever plays a significant role in fighting against diseases. But, the point is, should you let an illness run its course or simply treat it?

Here, we have listed some of the steps that you can take to reduce the effectiveness of high fever.

  • Assess the temperature of the body with the help of a thermometer. If the indicator shows the temperature at 100.4°F, i.e. is 38°C or more, you are suffering from fever.
  • Now you need to remain on the bed and take proper rest
  • While you have a fever, you need to stay hydrated. Make sure to drink water, very diluted juices, or iced tea in order to replenish all the fluids, which might have been lost through sweating. However, in any case, if keeping the fluids down gets difficult for you, you can always suck on the ice chips. Some may find it out of context and primarily insane, but this certainly helps during fever.
  • Unless and until you have chills make sure to remove blankets, sheets, or an extra layer of clothing
  • You must make use of cold compressions or take tepid baths; it will make you feel comfortable. Avoid ice cube baths, cold water baths, rubs or alcohol baths while on fever as they can worsen your condition.
  • If you face any sort of alarming signs, you must consult your doctor without any delay.

Having a fever is the body’s way to cope with the external factors, which might have invaded your body in order to cause you infections. Generally, whenever a bacteria or a virus enters your body, you suffer from fever. But, temperatures can also be caused when you take immunisations or have had a sunburn. Regardless, of age, fever can affect almost anyone. People with compromised immunity levels are the ones that suffer from fever even with little exposure to the outside environment.

How can the situation be assessed?

When an adult person with a generally healthy lifestyle suffers from fever, it feels like having been hit by a truck. But, in cases of children, they feel quite comfortable when they have a fever. Fever is not something that can be commonly treated; neither it is something that affects every individual equally. Some of the symptoms that you might face while having a fever are:

  • A severe ache in the muscles
  • Excessive headache
  • Loss in the level of appetite
  • Feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or weak
  • Random chills
  • Sweating
  • Vomiting
  • Nauseating
  • Experience rashes

If you have rashes over your skin and you see it accompanied by fever, you should consult your doctor immediately. Your doctor will help you determine the root cause of any of the symptoms as mentioned earlier and then can treat you accordingly.
