The last Panchayat elections in UP were held during April-May 2021. As such, the Panchayat elections in UP are due for May 26, 2026. These will be followed by Zila and Kshetra Panchayat elections in mid-July 2026. However, even though the Panchayat elections are due in 2026, the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) is yet to announce the official election dates.

Even though preparations are underway on a massive scale, it appears that some delay has occurred. The publication of the final voter list was originally scheduled for April 2026. But due to the delay, that date has now been shifted to June 10, 2026. Until the final voter list is published, the Panchayat elections in UP cannot be held.

There are reports that the 2026 Panchayat elections in UP could actually be postponed beyond the constitutional deadline. The state government could be planning to hold the Panchayat elections sometime after the 2027 UP Assembly elections. The latter is expected in March 2027. In the interim period, the management could be handled by temporary administrators. However, this decision could be challenged in the court.

As seen with the voter list revision in other states, lakhs of wrong entries have been found in the voter list. These include people who have died, not living at the location anymore, duplicate entries and even fake entries.

The Election Commission of India is on a mission to clean the voter list across the country. This revision in the voter list was challenged in the Supreme Court. But the court has already given its decision in favor of the Election Commission. As such, the revision in the voter list campaign will continue in states where it is yet to be fully completed.

Another reason for the delay in 2026 Panchayat elections in UP is the reservation exercises for SC, ST and OBC seats. For this, a dedicated Backward Classes Commission process has to be followed.
