Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay or C. Joseph Vijay is the CM of Tamil Nadu in 2026. His party TVK contested the Tamil Nadu assembly election for the first time and turned out to be successful. While TVK did not get a simple majority on its own, the party was able to form the government with support from other political parties and some independent candidates.
TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections. It contested in 233 of the 234 assembly constituencies and won 108 seats. That is 10 seats less than the simple majority of 118 seats. As mentioned earlier, Vijay's TVK was able to form a government with support from other political parties.
In the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly election, the biggest loss of seats was registered by DMK. As compared to 133 seats won in the previous assembly election in Tamil Nadu, DMK's wins dropped to 59 seats in the 2026 assembly election in Tamil Nadu. Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay was born on 22nd June, 1974 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He comes from a Roman Catholic family. He started his film career as a child actor in 1984. Over the years, he emerged as one of the most popular superstars in Tamil cinema (Kollywood). More recently, Vijay decided to retire from the film industry and focus on his political career.
The TVK party was launched in February 2024, with a focus on youth empowerment, anti-corruption, social justice and development issues. TVK positioned itself as a fresh alternative to the long-dominant Dravidian parties, all while remaining focused on Tamil pride.
Vijay's TVK was able to emerge as the single largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections due to several reasons. One of these is the massive fan base of Vijay across Tamil Nadu. This provided an instant connection at the grassroots level. Anti-incumbency was another major factor that allowed TVK to dominate.
Vijay also focused on massive campaigning, where he used his charisma and oratory skills to connect with the voters. He was able to establish a strong connection with the youth and rural voters.
