Officially known as the Hellenic Republic, Greece is a country in the southeastern part of Europe. Well-known for being one of the most powerful countries in the European continent, it is safe to say it traces its roots back to ancient Greece. Greek civilization is popular for many discoveries and also houses to many inventions that are used even in the present world. Listed below are 5 ancient Greek inventions that have changed the world

1.     Olympics

Though Olympics is a global phenomenon but do you have any idea of its roots? It is in ancient Greece in 776 B.C. where the first record of the Olympics was being played. In honour of the Greek God, Zeus games like running and wrestling were played. Initially, it lasts for an entire day, but in 472 B.C. with the addition of new games, the event was extended to five days. Olympic remains one of the most popular inventions by the Greek people and has drawn a lot of inspiration from this rich heritage.

2.     Astrolabe

One of the most significant ancient Greek inventions is Astrolabe. This device is designed to predict the position of the sun, moon, stars, and planets and also for the astronomical measurements like altitudes of celestial bodies. This has been one of the most valuable contributions by Greece in the field of astronomy.

3.     Mathematics

The world-famous Pythagoras theorem was proposed by the Greek mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras. It is a major benchmark in the fields of mathematics, astronomy and geometry. In 300 B.C. the first geometry book was written by Greek mathematician Euclid.

4.     Theatre and Music

Theatre was developed by ancient Greek to portray qualities such as patriotism, equality and hospitality, respect to their holy Gods and inculcating these values in their children. During 6 B.C. educating people by performing became a ritual. They also had a special place for music in their lives. Pan pipes which laid the foundation of the modern flutes was invented by them.

5.     Weapons

Since it was one of the most dominant civilizations of its time, it could not have been possible to dominate other civilizations without the use of specialized weapons. Catapult is a weapon that used to fire arrows or big stones at the enemy. This ancient Greek weapon laid down the foundations of many of the modern weapons which is invented by Dionysus the Elder of Syracuse in 399 B.C.
