While the mobile number portability process has been simplified, there are still some important things to remember
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) lets you move to a new network while keeping your old number. So, if you want Jio's plans or network, you do not need to change your number. You just shift it from Airtel to Jio. The whole process is simple, mostly free, and takes just a few working days.
Check for eligibility
Before you start, make sure your number qualifies. Your Airtel connection must be at least 90 days old (or 90 days since your last port). If you are on postpaid, clear all pending Airtel dues. Your number should not be involved in any ownership-change request or court case. In case you recently replaced your SIM, you must wait for seven days. These rules are mandated by TRAI. If any of them is not met, your porting request can be rejected.
Get the Unique Porting Code (UPC)
The UPC is an 8-digit code you need to start porting. From the Airtel number you want to move, send an SMS in this format:
PORT <your 10-digit number> to 1900
You will get the code by SMS from 1901. In most parts of India, the UPC is valid for only 4 days. So, use it in the allotted time period. At some locations like Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and the North East, the UPC is valid for 30 days. However, please check latest info.
Apply for Jio SIM
You can apply at a Jio Store or Jio retailer, or online through the MyJio app or Jio's website. For online, you order a Jio SIM, raise the porting request, and get free home delivery. Keep your documents ready. These include proof of identity and proof of address, such as Aadhaar, Voter ID, Passport or Driving License. You can also use eKYC.
Fill the porting form and Customer Acquisition Form. Give your UPC, and complete the KYC. Jio says porting to Jio is free. TRAI caps any porting charge at Rs 6.46 in case the provider chooses to charge a fee.
Wait for number porting
After you submit, you will get an SMS confirming your request. You will have a 24-hour window in which you can cancel by sending ‘CANCEL <number>’ to 1900 (the fee, if paid, is not refunded). Porting within the same circle takes about 3 working days. Moving between circles takes around 5 days. For locations like J&K, Assam and the North East, it can take up to 15 days.
You will be told the exact date and time. The switch usually happens at night, with no service for up to 2 hours. Insert your new Jio SIM after the given time, and your number will become active on Jio network.
Important things to remember
Any prepaid balance left on your Airtel SIM will lapse after number portability. It will not be carried over to Jio. Your number stays the same throughout. So, contacts, bank OTPs and apps keep working. You can track your request in the MyJio app. And if you have an old Airtel postpaid bill unpaid, Jio can disconnect your number even after porting. So, settle everything first.
