Estimates suggest that SSR Movies was launched around 2017. It started with Telugu and Tamil movies, but later expanded to include various other content including Bollywood and Hollywood movies. There have also been court cases, where the court directed the Department of Telecommunication to block around 110 domains related to SSR Movies. However, such sites keep changing domain names, which makes it difficult to put a complete ban.

Is SSR Movies legal?

Any site offering free movies and web series without the consent of the real owners is essentially an illegal platform. Content uploaded without a license from the rights holder is an infringement under the Copyright Act, 1957. Commercial use of such copyrighted material without license attracts Section 63, which provides imprisonment of six months to three years plus a fine.

The Cinematograph (Amendment) Act, 2023 also comes into the picture, with Sections 6AA and 6AB prohibiting unauthorized recording and the public exhibition of pirated content. Such acts are punishable under Section 7(1A) with three months to three years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3 lakh extending to 5% of the film's audited gross production cost.

Users are again cautioned that such sites can have malware, phishing and aggressive advertising risk, with nobody accountable when something goes wrong. Treat it as piracy-adjacent and unreliable rather than as a legitimate film information source. Choose legit platforms such as JioHotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, SonyLIV, ZEE5, Apple TV+, Aha, Sun NXT, etc.
