When it comes to the world of politics, there are plenty of conspiracy theories, often without any solid evidence
- Joseph Vijay-led TVK (Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam) came as a big surprise in Tamil Nadu politics in 2026 by emerging as the single largest party in the state. It won more seats than the two traditional parties, DMK and AIADMK. While unable to get full majority on its own, TVK created a coalition to form the government in Tamil Nadu. It was earlier believed that TVK could be an ally of BJP. But in the coalition, TVK actually got support from Congress to form the government. This has confused many people and questions are being asked such as whether TVK party is BJP or Congress. Let's check out the details.
First, it is important to understand what TVK is since it is a new political party. TVK is built largely on the fan following of Vijay, who is an actor turned politician. Tamil Nadu has a long history, where many famous actors went on to become top politicians. This is true for Vijay as well. Vijay's fan base is known as Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, which was converted into a political party in early 2024.
It attracted more than 15 million members in a short period of time. Recognition as a political party came in September 2026 and the party was given a 'whistle' symbol. TVK's slogan is Pirappokkum Ella Uyirkkum, which means all are equal by birth. This slogan is derived from the Thirukkural.
What is TVK's core ideology?
TVK has identified Periyar E. V. Ramasamy, B. R. Ambedkar and K. Kamaraj as its ideological leaders. It has also included two women, Rani Velu Nachiyar and Anjalai Ammal, as their inspiration. TVK focuses on things like secular social justice, proportional representation and a two-language policy (Tamil and English). Other objectives of TVK include state autonomy, a caste census, moving education from the Concurrent List back to the State List and abolition of the Governor's post.
TVK party is BJP or Congress? - What is TVK's relationship with the BJP and Congress?
Based on publicly available information, TVK has been largely adversarial towards BJP. TVK had described BJP as "divisive forces". TVK had announced that it will contest the state elections alone. It had ruled out any alliance with DMK, AIADMK, BJP and Congress. During the election period, there were speculations that a secret deal was going on between TVK and the BJP-led NDA.
However, such speculations were never officially confirmed. TVK contested alone and won 108 seats on its own. TVK was equally distant from Congress, but after the election it had to accept the support of Congress party. TVK needed 10 more seats (118 total) to form a government, which came with the support of Congress, the Left parties (CPI and CPI-M), the VCK and the IUML.
This move by Congress was surprising since it was already part of the coalition with DMK. Due to this, the DMK accused the Congress of backstabbing. Vijay was sworn in as Chief Minister, with the Congress, VCK, IUML and MDMK as partners in what became known as the TVK-led Alliance. More recently, TVK became part of the INDIA bloc, the national Opposition alliance. This is the strongest basis for anyone calling TVK a Congress party. However, the two parties remain distinct even when part of the same national coalition.
